The Best Music for a Road Trip
Choosing music for a road trip is an individualized process due to the likes and dislikes of each person involved. However, there are some things to keep in mind while choosing the playlist for a road trip.
The first thing to keep in mind is whether or not you are traveling alone. Traveling with others means that music should be picked that will please everyone to some extent. The last thing anyone wants while driving long distances is for passengers to be ‘moody’. This creates an uncomfortable environment for the driver as well as others, making the trip unsatisfying. Take the group’s tastes into consideration and make a ‘mixed genre’ cd, if necessary, to include a little bit of something for everyone. It will make the trip much more fun!
Whether you are traveling alone or with others, the music you pick should be music that stimulates you. Driving for long amounts of time is monotonous enough on its own without adding music that may overly relax you. You may enjoy listening to a soothing instrumental cd at home but if that cd tends to lull you to sleep, it is not one you want to be playing while driving! Choose music that makes you want to sing along or dance; anything that keeps your mind active and awake.
If you and another driver will be switching back and forth during the trip, be sure the other driver has their own music for when it is their turn. What is great for keeping you awake and alert may not be the case for them! For instance, my husband can listen to soft jazz or even public radio news and talk shows and it will keep him stimulated and awake forever. However, those same things put me right to sleep, so when I drive, radio stations or cd’s go in that play my favorite songs; songs that keep me singing along and keeping beat on the steering wheel.
Finally, keep in mind that the cd’s chosen for your trip may not have to be strictly music. Some people love to listen to audio books and as long as the cd doesn’t put you to sleep or make anyone else totally miserable – go for it!
